Fantoberfest!

Posted by on Oct 19, 2011 in News | 0 comments

Thank you to EVERYONE who came to our Inaugural Fantoberfest last weekend.  And a huge thanks to the bands who did such an awesome job entertaining us all day!  There were performances from No BS Brass Band, Half Jeffersons, Spillsheet, Kids in Qual, The Big Payback, Peoples Blues of Richmond, Audio Ammo, Long Arms, Aparallax, Kings of Belmont and Less than Jake.  Starr Hill did an awesome job of sponsoring this event and serving up delicious beer throughout the day.

And the very best thing about Fantoberfest?  The event raised a ton of money for Connor’s Heroes, a charitable organization which benefits childhood cancer.  Please take a perusal through the photos below to look for any familiar faces!

Lastly, we would love to get some feedback!  Were you there?  Did you have a good time?  What would you have done differently?  You rock RVA!

Thanks to Brown Distributing for the photos!

Why is a Local Music Scene so Important

Posted by on Sep 20, 2011 in News | 0 comments

Well? Why is it?

1. Creates a Sense of Community

When a bar (we’ll just call it The Republic for argument’s sake) features a local band, they, coupled with the actual musicians and the fans, create a sense of unity and community. They may sound silly, but some local bands have as much of a following as any ‘famous’ group. It’s awesome to constantly see the same faces all the time, coming in to suport their fave bands, and helping a place like The Republic keep busy. Fans often recommend local groups to us, who we’re all too happy to help. The fans have a blast, the band rocks the house and we stay busy and get to entertain you! Win win.

2. Stops Homogenous Music

Now we’re not here to step on any toes…but SOMETIMES the six songs we hear on the radio over and over (and over) get a little bit redundant. Local bandsRVA, Music Venues, Live Music, VA help to keep things fresh. We feature DJ’s who are constantly mixing it up (see what we did there?), bands who do original music or even original covers, heck we even have America’s #1 tribute to Yacht Rock band comin’ in! What is fresher than that?

3. Creativity! Passion! Encouragement!

This is Richmond, a city known for and very proud of its creativity. Local bands being able to get up on our stage and do whatever the heck they want, allows them to share their passion. It may also encourage some of us to start our own bands. Artists inspiring artists. Is there anything better?

4. Just plain ol’ entertaining!

The most simple reason? It’s awesome. Who doesn’t love coming across a local band they love? Getting to see them over and over? Not having to pay some exorbitant fee for a ticket? (We never have a cover btw. Just sayin’…) All in all, local music is pretty sweet! And Richmond sure knows how to rock it!

What do you think? Any other reasons you love the local music scene?
